A GIFT OF WISDOM
A Gift of Wisdom
As we go through life we learn things we did not know before. We accumulate experience that others younger than us might be able to learn from.
There is a Jewish spiritual practice of creating an “Ethical Will.” An Ethical Will is a statement of advice to others who are living now or who will live after us. It is an opportunity for others to learn from our experience. In an Ethical Will we write down the lessons we have learned in life so that others we love and care for can learn these lessons and remember us. An Ethical Will is a Gift of Wisdom from one generation to the next and to all generations that follow.
The guide that follows is meant to help you create an Ethical Will. The questions are meant to help you realize what you have to say and put your thoughts into words. You do not have to answer any of the questions all at once. In fact, it may be better if you think about them over time and write down your thoughts as you think of
them, or record them on tape.
You will find that over time the insights you record will grow longer as you find what it is you want to say.
A GIFT OF WISDOM
My Body may be failing, but my Mind is still strong.
My thoughts can go many places where lately my body cannot.
My thoughts range far and wide, and I have many things to say.
Following the example of a Jewish spiritual tradition of recording lessons I have learned in life for generations to come, let my words fly across the ages:
WHO MY WORDS ARE ADDRESSED TO:
THINGS I HAVE DONE:
THINGS I HAVE LEARNED:
THINGS I WISH I HAD DONE:
THINGS I AM GLAD I DIDN’T DO:
THINGS I WOULD RECOMMEND TO MY READER:
THINGS I WISH TO FORGIVE:
THINGS FOR WHICH I WISH TO ASK FORGIVENESS:
SPECIAL THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO SAY OR EXPLAIN TO MY READER OR TO SPECIFIC PEOPLE:
SPECIAL THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST:
My Dear Ones: Grow in Life! Hear my words and remember me!
